The Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (DEIB) is one of the largest European ICT departments. With nearly 1000 members, researchers, collaborators, PhD students, technical and administrative staff, the Department is a vital institution capable of promoting education, fundamental and applied research, and technology transfer to companies.

Research is the main focus of DEIB, pursued according to the highest international quality standards. The six department sections bring together consolidated competences in systems and control, computer science and engineering, electronics, telecommunications, bioengineering and electrical engineering. They also contribute, each with their peculiarities, to the methodological, technological and applicative development of five transversal research areas: Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technologies; High Performance Computing, Smart Sensors and Big Data; Health Sciences and Technologies; Smart Cities and Smart Mobility; ICT for Industry 4.0. All the research sections have a broad network of partnerships with the best international institutions, which makes the Department one of the fundamental players in the worldwide scenario of scientific and technological innovation.

DEIB has always been able to attract projects and investments, from both public institutions and private companies, at the national and international level. Passing harsh selections, some DEIB Professors have earned prestigious awards from the European Research Council: in 2008 Stefano Ceri and Carlo Ghezzi won two Advanced Grants, in 2015 Daniele Ielmini a Consolidator Grant, in 2016 Stefano Ceri an Advanced Grant, in 2019 Daniele Ielmini and Marco Rasponi two Proof of Concept, in 2021 Daniele Ielmini an Advanced Grant and in 2022 Daniele Ielmini a Proof of Concept and Paola Occhetta a Starting Grant. The DEIB participated in 131 H2020 projects, for a total value of about € 43M, 20 of which as Coordinator, and participated in about 18 Horizon Europe projects, for a total value of almost € 11M, 4 of which as Coordinator.

DEIB shares with the Politecnico di Milano a strong commitment to cooperating with the industry and with the society, and the effort to bring real world’s problems closer to academic research. DEIB researchers engage both in long-term research activities and in applied research projects targeted to the immediate industrial exploitation. Today DEIB is a leading contributor in terms of delivered patents, spin-offs, and incubated companies.
